Final Film Trailer

This is the film trailer that I have produced for my final product and have uploaded to YouTube in order for my target audience to watch my trailer. The narrative of this film trailer consists of a young footballer trying to make it as a professional but he encounters some adversity on his journey. One of his biggest adversities is that he is under pressure from his girlfriend to become a professional footballer. His coach offers him the motivation he needs to pursue his dream of becoming a professional footballer. In summary, it is a film trailer for a coming of age sports biopic about the journey of a young footballer on his pathway to success, which is achieving his dream of becoming a professional footballer, while overcoming any adversities that he encounters.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media product uses forms and conventions of real media products because it has a journey narrative of the main character trying to be successful while coming from adversity. More specifically, it follows the story of a young footballer trying to become successful while under pressure to make it from his girlfriend, coach and any other adversity that comes his way. This type of narrative is common in many sports films and is also popular with cinema audiences because a lot of people enjoy watching an underdog come from adversity to achieve in whatever it is that they are trying to do. For example, Rocky (1976) is an archetypal film of overcoming adversity and problems to reach success. The narrative is an aspiring boxer called Rocky Balboa training to fight the world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. He manages to go the full 15 rounds with the world champion, knocking him down once which was the first time Creed was knocked down in his career, but ends up losing on a split decision. Although Rocky lost the fight, my product still uses forms and conventions seen in the Rocky film because it shows a narrative of a young aspiring footballer trying to overcome personal problems to reach potential success within football. This is similar to Rocky (1976) as the iconic film follows the story of a young aspiring boxer overcoming adversities while also trying to reach success in his sport but primarily in this film, trying to win against the world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed.

A further way in which my media product uses forms and conventions of real media products is through the use of close up camera shots and mid shots to indicate that the genre of my film trailer is a sports biopic. This is because sports biopics are always personal stories so it makes sense for this type of film to have a lot of close up shots and mid shots in order to illustrate the personal details of the main character's life story.

When creating my film poster, I included forms and conventions of real media products in this ancillary product because I have taken inspiration from actual film posters that belong to the similar genre as my final product which is a football biopic. This includes basic codes and conventions of film posters such as the film title, main image, tagline, credits and others. However, I researched to see how these conventions of film posters where used in my genre of a football biopic in order to decide how I could use this in my final product or how to amend them to suit my own film trailer narrative. For example, one of the film posters that I researched was for Goal! The Dream Begins and this includes a main image of the main character dressed in a black tracksuit top while holding his football towards his head with his eyes closed. When I was producing my film poster, I decided to to take a different route in terms of the design which challenged some of the forms and conventions in the sports biopic genre. This is because I wanted to create something that would fit the narrative of my film trailer and be different to the existing football biopic posters. Moreover, I chose to use multiple images on the one poster and they where all different yet the images still had a connection to the narrative of my final film trailer. One of the images located at the top of my poster is a group of palm trees on the sides of a road in Los Angeles and this included on my film poster because living in LA is one of the main character's goals when he reaches a high level of success. It fits with the conventions of my narrative because it is a popular dream among most footballers and people in general to live in LA as it indicates 'making it' and reaching the pinnacle of your life.

When creating my film magazine front cover, I made sure that I incorporated the basic forms and conventions of real life media products which includes basic components such as having a main image, masthead, cover lines, anchorage text and others. This allowed me to have a good basis to work from and create a high quality ancillary product that connects well with my main product and my other ancillary product. The magazine covers that I researched for my ancillary task mainly consisted of sports magazine front covers because the genre of my film trailer is a sports biopic and I wanted to produce something that followed the conventions of my final product. For example, this Score magazine front cover has cover lines that relate to football and fitness such as 'running tips' and 'world's best players'. I took inspiration from these cover lines and used these conventions of a real media product when creating my magazine front cover. I used the conventions of this real media product by creating my own cover lines based off the magazine that I researched. Some of the cover lines that I produced include: 'Top tips on dribbling on Messi - page 25', '25 ways to improve your sports nutrition on page 40' and 'Stars of World At Your Feet talk life on set and future aspirations - page 35'. This allows me to create a magazine cover that suits the conventions of a sport magazine cover as it has cover lines and title that relate to football but this also connects well to my main product because it's a film trailer for a football biopic.

Ancillary Task 2 (Film Magazine Front Cover) - Developed Edit of Second Version

These are developed edits that I have produced of my magazine front cover, with each more recent version having developed adjustments to it. These adjustments mainly include adding more cover lines to the front cover in order to develop it and make the front cover more detailed. This allows more information about the content of my film magazine to be on the front cover and will provide more detail as to what will be included in key parts of the magazines. Moreover, the audience will have a better understanding of the type of the content that will be included in my film magazine as they will be able to read the cover lines describing the most important parts of the magazine. This will make the target audience more inclined to buy the magazine front cover because they will have a good understanding of the key pages in the magazine and will therefore want to read the magazine in full to find out more about the key points described on the cover.

Ancillary Task 2 (Film Magazine Front Cover) - First Draft

Using Photoshop, I have created a basic template to produce my magazine cover. I have done this through using an image of my main character that I took earlier in the year and by creating a title in white text with the font Silom and a size of 36 pt. I have chosen to call my magazine 'Superstar Magazine' because it is probably the most suitable name for the conventions and genre of my final film. In addition, it also fits the conventions of what a typical name of a film magazine front cover would be.

In order to develop my magazine front cover, I will add cover lines that are relevant to the narrative of my final film such as quotes that say: "Life on set with Rossi" and "Interview with the star of upcoming film World At Your Feet".  I feel that this image may not be powerful enough to be the front cover of the magazine and I may have to change to an image that is stronger and more suitable for the conventions of my magazine cover as it is related to a football-themed film trailer. In addition, the title could be more suited to sport rather than superstar which is more related to film. I may call the magazine 'Goal' as this would be more suitable to the genre of my final film. The font and colour of the text doesn't look strong enough as it isn't in capitals, which is what magazine covers have as titles, and the colour white doesn't really portray the conventions of my final films.

Ancillary Task 1 (Film Poster) - Developing Font Of Tagline

When using Adobe Photoshop to create my film poster, I developed the font of the tagline multiple times. This is because I decided that the previous fonts that I used didn't fit in with the genre and conventions of the main product. The original font that I used on the tagline was in block capitals and was the exact same type of font as my main title and credits. Therefore, I decided that it would be more aesthetically pleasing if the tagline was in a different font and the text was in lowercase instead of it being uppercase. The colour of the tagline, red, remained the same because it has a lot of powerful connotations such as passion and desire and links quite well to the genre and conventions of my film trailer. This is because the connotations passion and desire link to the conventions of my film trailer because the main character has a strong desire and passion to achieve his goal of becoming a successful footballer. Furthermore, it also links to the young footballer's burning desire to get through any adversities that he encounters on his journey in order to achieve his goal.

Main Task - Film Trailer - Adding Voiceovers

To further improve my film, I have decided to add voiceovers by a peer student because I think that this could strengthen my narrative and reinforce the fact that becoming a successful professional footballer is a hard and challenging journey that involves a lot of hard work and training. In order to plan my voiceovers and allow my peer to read them for the audio recording, I have devised a list of voiceovers with time-codes of where they will appear in my final film and for how long. In addition, I also added some explanations to the voiceovers to enable the narrator to further understand the meaning of them and proceed to aid them with their narration.

List of voiceovers with time-codes:
  • 00:00:18:33 - 00:00:21:13: "Every guy has to make a decision one day: the girl or the game" - reading out of inter-title by narrator
  • 00:00:22:08 - 00:00:26:00: "The hard work begins with constant practice on the training field. If you encounter struggle, it is just another obstacle that you have to overcome to be the best"
  • 00:00:31:15 - 00:00:34:31: "Every time you miss a shot in practice, it fuels you to improve"
  • 00:00:36:34 - 00:00:38:38: "You will feel downhearted and that all your practice is being wasted. But don't let that stop you from achieving your goal; to be successful in this sport. You must pull through, it is as all part of your journey to achieve success"

Class Feedback On Film

To help me improve my short biopic film trailer, the whole class watched my film and provided verbal feedback suggesting improvements and what they liked about it. On top of this, they also provided feedback on an online spreadsheet for my trailer on which the whole class provided feedback for each other's films.

The feedback that was provided on the online spreadsheet included:

  • Peers liked the font used for the titles in my film trailer
  • Good, clear narrative to the trailer but the audio in some parts of the trailer could be revisited and corrected/edited.

This feedback will allow me to add more improvements to my final film and ensure that is the best possible project that it could be.
